Some Targets Are Not Identified While Using Measure and Scanning with the Cobalt 3D Imager

If you are using targets on your part to aid with point cloud registration, and you are not seeing the targets you expect to see in the point cloud, follow these guidelines.

  1. Make sure you are using the photogrammetry targets and settings correctly.
  2. Check the Measure User Manual, Preferences section, for instructions that pertain to the Cobalt 3D Imager.
  3. Verify that the lens covers on the projector and both cameras have been removed
  4. There are two possible scenarios that might be causing exposure, range, or view related problems.
    • If Measure does not identify targets and they do not appear in the point cloud data.
      • In the 3D Imager Measure Point Cloud Wizard, use the Color Mapping feature to assist in setting the optimum exposure as mentioned in the Cobalt User Manual. Check the Preview Exposure slider. Typically, you set exposure between 10 and 30 ms (milliseconds). The manual describes several ways to achieve this.
      • Use the Range Image feature as described in the Cobalt User Manual to position the part in front of the Cobalt within the field-of-view (FOV) range of each camera lens. This range is different depending on which camera lens you are using. Check the lens range-specification to be sure.
      • Make sure both cameras lenses can see all the targets you want to capture in the point cloud so that Measure can identify them. For instance, consider you have set 9 targets in different areas on a part you are imaging. If the right camera sees 6 targets and the left camera sees all 9, but only 3 are seen by both cameras, then the Cobalt only captures 3 targets and Measure only identifies those 3 targets.
    • If Measure identifies targets, but they do not appear in the point cloud data
      • In the 3D Imager Measure Point Cloud Wizard, use the Color Mapping feature to assist in setting the optimum exposure as mentioned in the Cobalt User Manual. Ensure that at least one exposure setting in the scan profile is set between 10 and 30 ms (milliseconds).
      • Make sure both cameras lenses can see all the targets you want to capture in the point cloud so that Measure can identify them. For instance, consider you have set nine targets in different areas on a part you are imaging. If the right camera sees six targets and the left camera sees all nine, but only three are seen by both cameras, then the Cobalt only captures 3 targets and Measure only identifies those three targets.
  5. If you are still not seeing targets, your Cobalt may need to be compensated.
