Ethernet Connection Instructions for the FARO Edge

There are 2 types of Ethernet connections available for the Edge to use: DHCP and Static IP.

Note: Ethernet connections to the FaroArm require the use of UDP port 2010. This port must be set to allow broadcast traffic in order to detect devices in the local network.

DHCP involves plugging your Edge Arm directly to a network hub as well as your workstation computer. To use DHCP:

  1. From the MAIN menu on the touch screen, touch SETTINGS.
  2. In the SETTINGS menu, touch CONNECTION.
  3. Touch the ETHERNET button.
  4. Touch DHCP for the Ethernet connection.
  5. Push the Green Checkmark.

NOTE: Your computer’s Ethernet card should be set up to detect an obtain an IP address automatically.

Static IP requires more steps but you can directly connect your Arm to a computer using the network card. To use the Static IP option:

  1. From the MAIN menu on the touch screen, touch SETTINGS.
  2. In the SETTINGS menu, touch CONNECTION.
  3. Touch the ETHERNET button.
  4. Touch Static IP for the Ethernet connection.
  5. You will be taken to the Static IP window where you can assign the Arm an actual network address.
    • For IP, use 128.128.128.100
    • For Subnet Mask, use 255.255.255.0
  6. Push the Green Checkmark.
  7. Next, you will need to configure your laptop network card to talk to the Edge’s specific network. In Windows 7, go to the Start menu and choose > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  8. Choose “Change Adapter Settings” from the list on the left hand side.
  9. Right click “Local Area Connection” and choose Properties.
  10. Highlight “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click Properties.
  11. Click the “Use the Following IP address” radio button.
    • For IP address, use 128.128.128.X (where X is any number between 0-99)
    • Subnet mask, use 255.255.255.0
  12. Click OK to accept the changes, then click close.

To connect your Arm to your computer once one of the above settings have been used:

  1. On your computer, go to Start > All Programs > FARO > FARO Ethernet Setup
  2. Once the program opens, use the drop down list to choose your Ethernet adapter (For example, Broadcom NetXtreme….)
  3. Push refresh and your Edge Arm should appear as an option.
  4. Click the checkbox next to the Arm.
  5. Open the desired software and the Arm should connect automatically.
