FARO SCENE can automatically detect reference targets and register related scans when you place the targets within the suggested range for the FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D or Photon. This saves you a lot of work manually identifying targets and registering related scans.

The correct target placement depends on the target type, the scan resolution setting, the size of the reference targets, and how close or far away you place targets relative to the scanner. For example, when using checkerboard targets and scanning at 1/4th resolution, the distance from the scanner to the targets should not be more than 15m.
Target size determines how far away from the scanner you can place them. The larger the target, the further away you can place it. Regardless of the target type or size, the distance between the scanner and the target should never be less than 1m. When working with spherical targets, make sure they are big enough to have at least 10-15 pixels in the final scan. If they are not big enough, SCENE cannot detect them.
To help you understand the best distance range for target placement, this table shows the scan resolution and estimated maximum distance from the scanner within which you can place 140mm spherical targets.
