Quick Start Steps for the Laser Tracker ION, Xi, X, and SI

FARO® Laser System Quick Start

  1. Unpack the system

  • Tracker Head
  • Master Control Unit (MCU)
  • MCU power cord
  • 30-foot communication/power cable
  • Ethernet Cable (cross-wired)
  • Remote Temperature Sensor
  • Mandrel with spanner wrench
  1. Mount the Tracker

  • Screw the Mandrel onto a stable Instrument Stand, and tighten with the supplied spanner wrench. Check the complete instrument Stand and make sure it is stable and tight.
  • Lift the Tracker by the handles and lower it onto the Mandrel.
  • Tighten the Mandrel by turning the locking lever. Make sure that the tracker is secured.
  1. Connect the system

Warning: Do not apply power to any component in the system until all of the cables have been properly connected.

  • Connect the 30 foot communication/power cable to the Tracker Head (bottom) and MCU (left side).
  • Connect the supplied Ethernet Cable from the right side of MCU to the PC Ethernet port.
  • Connect the Remote Air Temperature sensor to the MCU temperature port 1.
  • Connect the MCU power cord to the MCU and a 120 or 240 VAC power source. It is recommended to use an Uninterruptible Power Supply between the power source and the tracker.
  1. Weather Station

The FARO Laser Tracker has an integrated weather station that continuously reads temperature, pressure and humidity. For the best results, the air sensor should be placed in the working volume. The remote air and material sensors are plug and play.
Note: The Remote Air Temperature sensor must be connected to the MCU for Tracker operation.

  1. Computer Configuration

The FARO Laser Tracker requires a Pentium III PC (or better), running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, with an Ethernet card.

  • Only one Ethernet card should be enabled.
  • The TCP/IP setting should be set to a static address of 128.128.128.X (where X is any number between 0 and 99), with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
  • The Laser Tracker’s IP address is 128.128.128.100. Direct connection to the Laser Tracker requires the supplied cross-wired Ethernet cable with an RJ-45 jack.
  1. Startup

When all connections have been made, switch on the power on the right side of the MCU. The first time you run the application software after a power up, the Startup Checks will run. The Startup Checks wait for the laser to stabilize approximately 10 minutes) and then initializes the Laser Tracker.
Note: For maximum accuracy, wait approximately
one hour before continuing.

  1. CompIT

Run CompIT Pointing Interim Test prior to a measurement session to verify accuracy. If necessary, the Interim Test may recommend a Self Compensation or a Pointing Compensation.

  1. Measurement Settings

Absolute Distance Meter (ADM) Only trackers (Base Model ION’s and X trackers) only have one distance measurement mode which is Absolute Distance Measurement (ADM).   ION’s with the optional IFM and Xi trackers have three modes of distance measurement:  Interferometer (IFM), Absolute Distance Measurement (ADM) only, and IFM set by ADM.  ADM Only is easiest to measure with, but IFM Only can provide slightly better accuracy if the environmental conditions are ideal.  IFM set by ADM is available to use if you wish.

Older SI trackers that have not been upgraded to an XI should be used in IFM Set by ADM if performing scanning or dynamic measurements.
