License Activation for CAM2

Overview

Most FARO® software requires a valid license to open and use it. As part of your FARO software purchase, you will receive a Product Key, the key provides secure access to your FARO software. CAM2® 2018 and later contains a built-in License Manager that allows you to add, manage, and update licenses and provides information such as the type of license and expiration date.

Before attempting to update/activate your license:

  • Ensure you have stable internet connection.
  • Ensure you have administrator privileges on your computer.
  • Turn off all anti-virus and firewall software, as it can affect the activation process. Be sure to turn it back on again at the end of this process. If you do not know how to do this, contact your IT department.
  • If you are using a USB Portlock/Dongle, attach it to your computer before you open the software.

The License Manager interface varies by version, please refer to the section below that apples to the version of software you are installing.

CAM2 Version 2018.9 and Later

When you start the application for the first time on a computer that does not have a valid license, the License Manager Wizard homepage will be displayed.

Product Key

Online Activation

  • If you have a valid Product Key, click the Product key button, then enter it in the field provided and click Next.
    If your computer is not connected to the internet, click the "I don't have internet connection" link and continue to the Offline Activation section below.

Offline Activation

If you need to activate your software on a computer that does not have an internet connection, you can do so using another computer that does have internet access via one of two methods. Each method requires a creation of a C2V file from the offline computer, and then sending this file (using an online computer) via email or using FARO Licensing Portal website. Both of these methods will return a V2C license file, which can then be transferred to offline computer (via a USB thumb drive or similar media).

Web Portal

On the offline computer:

Click the Web Portal button to begin.

  1. Click the blue C2V button. Browse to the location where you want to save the C2V file. Name the file with the software name you are updating so you can easily identify it, (e.g. "SoftwareName.c2v") and then click Save. Copy this file to a USB thumb drive or similar media that will allow you to transfer it to the online computer.

  2. Eject the USB thumb drive from the computer and click Next.

On the online computer:

  1. Insert the USB thumb drive or similar media that contains the C2V file created in the previous section.
  2. Go the FARO Licensing Portal website at: https://license.faro.com/Portal/activation
  3. Click Browse and navigate to the location of the C2V file, select it and click Open.
  4. Paste the Product Key into the Insert Product Key field, and then click ACTIVATE.

  5. The next screen will verify the activation was successful, click the Download v2c file button to download the activated license file. It will be in the format of "activation_########_######.v2c"

  6. Copy this file to a USB thumb drive or similar media that will allow you to transfer it back to the offline computer where the software is installed.

On the offline computer:

  1. Insert the USB thumb drive or similar media that contains the V2C file downloaded in the previous section.
  2. Return to the License Manager screen and click Next.
  3. Click the blue V2C button. Browse to the location where you saved the V2C file, select it and click Open.

  4. The updated product/license key information will now be applied and you may begin using your FARO software.
Email

On the offline computer:

Click the Email button to begin.

  1. Click the blue C2V button. Browse to the location where you want to save the C2V file. Name the file with the software name you are updating so you can easily identify it, (e.g. "CAM2.c2v") and then click Save. Copy this file to a USB thumb drive or similar media that will allow you to transfer it to the online computer.

On the online computer:

  1. Insert the USB thumb drive or similar media that contains the C2V file created in the previous section.
  2. Create and send an email as follows:
    • To: license@faro.com
    • Subject: {your product key}
    • Attachment: Attach the C2V file created in the previous section.
  3. In a few moments you will receive a return email with a V2C file attached. Download this .V2C file to a USB thumb drive or similar media that will allow you to transfer it back to the offline computer where the software is installed.

On the offline computer:

  1. Insert the USB thumb drive or similar media that contains the V2C file downloaded in the previous section.
  2. Return to the License Manager screen and click Next.
  3. Click the blue V2C button. Browse to the location where you saved the V2C file, select it and click Open.

  4. The updated product/license key information will now be applied and you may begin using your FARO software.

Trial

If you want to familiarize yourself with FARO software before making a purchase, take advantage of the full-featured trial by clicking the Trial button. Trail time periods range from 7 to 90 days depending on the product and version.

Hard Lock Key

Upon startup, the software will automatically detect an installed hard lock key/dongle. If you inserted the hard lock key/dongle after the software has started, click the Refresh button to attempt to re-detect it.

Note: If you are using a hard lock key/dongle and do not have internet access, you will need to start CAM2 in trial mode and then follow the Manual License Update procedure within the 2018.8 and Earlier section below.

Transfer License

In the event that your license key is located on another computer on your network, the Transfer Key allows ability to transfer a license key that is located on another computer to the computer you are currently using.

  1. Click on Transfer Key button, the Key Transfer window appears.

  2. In the Available license on host: dropdown box, select the computer that contains the license key you wish to transfer.
  3. Click on the desired key to highlight it
  4. Read and click the check box:
    I fully understand that by clicking Next after selecting a license available on a specific host I will make it unavailable in that computer and available in this one.
  5. Click the Next button.
  6. The license manager will apply the license key you specified to the computer you are currently using.

Network License

System administrators can create a network license server to make a pool of licenses available to client computers running FARO software. Licenses are hosted on the license server and are shared with client computers over a network. To access the license server, enter the hostname or IP in the field provided and click Next.

CAM2 Version 2018.8 and Earlier

First-Run License Activation

When you start the application for the first time on a computer that does not have a valid license, you will be prompted to enter a Product Key.

  • If you have a valid Product Key, enter it in the field provided and click Submit.
  • If you are upgrading from a previous version (and have a current maintenance/warranty contract), expand the More Options menu. Click the Update Licenses link. The software will automatically update your license for support of the new version. This process requires a stable internet connection, if you are not connected to the internet or the update fails, proceed to Manual License Update.

Manual License Update

If the Update license link was unsuccessful, create and email a C2V file to the FARO automated license update system. Once your email is received, the system sends you a matching V2C file to apply to your computer. C2V and V2C files are unique to the computer you use with FARO software and hold information pertaining to FARO software product keys. You cannot interchange these files with different computers.

Create the C2V File

  1. Click the Collect license information link.
  2. In the next window, browse to the location where you want to save the C2V file, write it down if you need to. Name the file with the software name you are updating (e.g. "CAM2 2018.c2v" and then click Save.
  3. Attach the file to an email and send it to the automated FARO licensing system:
  4. Within several minutes, the automated system sends you a reply with a matching V2C file attached.

Apply the V2C File

In the email returned from FARO, a V2C file will be attached. This file contains updated product/license key information and is unique to the computer you use with FARO software. Applying this V2C file updates the product/license keys stored on your computer or on your portlock/dongle.

Save the V2C file attached to the email you received from the automated license update system to a known location. Write down the location if you need to. If you have not received this email, contact FARO Support.

  1. Click Update from file
  2. Browse to the location where you saved the V2C file and click Open.
  3. The updated product/license key information will now be applied and you may begin using your FARO software.

Transfer a License from Another Computer

In the event that your license key is located on another computer on your network, the Transfer Key allows ability to transfer a license key that is located on another computer to the computer you are currently using.

  1. Click on Transfer Key, the Key Transfer window appears.

  2. The license manager will search your network for applicable license keys.
  3. Click on the desired key to highlight it, then click the Transfer button.
  4. The license manager will apply the license key you specified to the computer you are currently using.

Launching the License Manager Manually

After the first run of CAM2 software (and a valid license has been found), the License Manager will no longer automatically appear. To launch the License Manager manually follow the steps below.

  1. Click the File tab CAM2FileTabIcon.png (located next to the Home tab).
  2. In the left panel, click Help and then click the Manage Licenses button to launch the License Manager.
