Point Cloud Density Clarification with FARO Reality and FARO Zone 3D
Overview
Using FARO® Reality, you do not get the fullness of point coverage you do using a SCENE .lsproj file with FARO Zone 3D. FARO Zone 3D and Reality differ in terms of the size of point cloud files they can open, and the number of points they can display. When opening .pts, .las, .e57, .xyz, and .fls file types FARO Zone 3D and Reality use a LOSSY algorithm to manage performance by altering the number of points displayed. However, when FARO Zone 3D opens and displays SCENE .lsproj files, all points are displayed.
FARO Zone 3D
- For SCENE .lsproj files, there is no maximum for the number of points that FARO Zone 3D can display or open. When SCENE creates the .lsproj file, it identifies which points are visible from any given camera location.
-
FARO Zone 3D can open .pts, .las and .e57 point cloud files containing as many as 150 million points.
-
FARO Zone 3D can display up to 100 million points from .pts, .las and .e57 point cloud files but only by using a LOSSY algorithm to manage performance.
Reality
Display Options
For both Reality and FARO Zone 3D, there are options that manage performance and number of points displayed using a LOSSY algorithm. These options only apply to .pts, .las, .e57, .xyz, and .fls file types.
- For FARO Zone 3D, you can select between 5 graded performance options which range between 10 million and 100 million points. This can be adjusted after the file is imported.
- For Reality, rather than selecting between 5 performance options, the number of points must be adjusted before the file is imported. You can adjust points between 1 million and 10 million.
