Align Scans to CAD - Pipe Alignment with BuildIT Construction
Objective:
Using BuildIT Construction to best align both CAD file and cloud data of pipe works.
You’ll learn:
- A simple workflow from creating cylindrical plane to producing the surface deviation analysis of pipe assembly.
- Opening BuildIT.
- Split cloud and create cylindrical surface.
- Best Fit align the cloud to CAD surface.

If you would like to download the file used in this article, download the accompanying Training Data and extract its contents to a folder on your PC.
Create Three Cylindrical Surfaces on the Cloud Data.
Open the “Module 8.2.buildit” file by selecting “File> Open” and navigating to where the file is saved.
- Click on “Refine > Extract Surface”.
- Ensure “Surface Type” is set to cylinder and that “Create new cloud from identified points” is selected.
- The “Tolerance” value represents how far the software will search from the surface for the split cloud step.
- Using Shift and the left mouse button, select and drag on the cloud points to create a cylinder.
- Click Apply.
- Create 3 cylinders as shown below.
Best Fit Alignment
- Select "Align > Best Fit Alignment”.
- Zoom onto the cloud, select the cylinders created from the cloud in the pervious section and then select the same CAD pipe.
- Press “Add Pair”. Repeat the method for the other two cylinders.
- Once all 3 Pairs have been added then click Apply.
- Note: To create a deviation analysis, review the steps in Module 9: Verify Constructed Object to Intended CAD/BIM Model with BuildIT Construction.
Recap:
Congratulations, you have completed the module on aligning scan data based on pipes! By now you should have a grasp of the following:
- Open BuildIT
- Split cloud and create cylindrical plane.
- Best Fit align the cloud to CAD surface.
