Firmware Installation for the Focus Laser Scanner
Overview
Update the firmware of your FARO® Focus Laser Scanner to ensure optimal performance. New firmware versions from FARO provide additional features, issue fixes, and overall enhancements. Follow the instructions below to download and install the latest firmware for your Focus scanner model.

Verify Firmware Version
Check the firmware version number to determine if you have the latest version.
- On the Scanner, go to Manage > General Settings > Scanner Details.
- The latest version is 7.3.0, released 8 Oct 2024.

Installation
If your firmware is not up-to-date and was not automatically updated by your scanner, use the instructions below.
In addition to the methods below, with the FARO Stream it's now also possible to perform a firmware update via your mobile device. The Stream app will notify the user if an updated firmware is available, and then it can be downloaded and installed on the Focus scanner. There are three settings available in Stream for control of automatic firmware downloads. Download firmware whenever an Internet connection is available, only via a wireless network, or never.
Note: Always perform firmware updates indoors away from windows and doors. Any access to the outside may cause interference with the GPS server.
WARNING: Downloading firmware from a source other than explicitly provided by FARO may void your warranty and cause damage to your scanner.
- Make sure your scanner and PC are fully charged, plugged in, and connected to the internet.
- From the Focus Home screen, navigate to Manage > Service > Firmware Update.
- Check that the Enable Online Updates is ON.
- Make sure that the Fast Installation switch is in its ON position.
- Select Set Update Server URL. Make sure that the URL is https://farofirmware.websharecloud.com/lsupdates/. Select OK.
- Select Search for Updates Now. If an update is available, a message displaying the latest version number will appear.
- Select Download and Install.
- The scanner will download and being installation of the update. Do not power down the scanner during the update process.
- The scanner will reboot several times. This process may take up to 30 minutes.
- When the update is complete, “Firmware installed successfully” will appear on the Focus display.

Confirm results.
- Go to Manage > General Settings > Scanner Details.
- Check that the Firmware Revision version number matches the latest: 7.3.0.

WARNING: Downloading firmware from a source other than explicitly provided by FARO may void your warranty and cause damage to your scanner.
Transfer .LsSetupX file From the Computer to the Scanner
- Click here to download the firmware.
Note: Write down the version number that has the format x.x.x.xxxxx in the .LsSetupX file name. - Insert and open the SD card on your PC. If an Updates folder already exists at the top level, delete it.
- Create a new Updates folder at the top level. Make sure you capitalize the U.
- Make sure the download of the new firmware file has fully completed.
- Afterwards copy the .LsSetupX file into the new Updates folder.
- Wait again until the copy operation has completed and afterwards safely eject the SD card, and put it into the scanner.
Install the firmware update
- Plug your scanner into an outlet and verify the battery has a minimum 50% charge. This ensures that, if there is a power outage, the upgrade will not be interrupted. The firmware installation will not start if the battery charge is too low.
- From the Home screen, navigate to Manage > Service > Firmware Update.
- Verify that "Fast Installation" option is Enabled.
- Tap Update from SD Card.
- Finally, select Update Firmware.
- The update will transfer to the scanner's internal memory, and the installation will begin automatically. Do not disconnect from power or power down the scanner during the update process.
- The scanner may reboot several times. This process may take up to 30 minutes.
- When the update is complete, “Firmware installed successfully” will appear on the scanner’s display.
- Confirm results.
- Go to Manage > General Settings > Scanner Details.
- Check that the Firmware Revision version number matches the latest: 7.3.0.

Transfer .LsSetup file From the Computer to the Scanner
The latest version of the firmware is 6.8.3, released 7 May 2024.
- Click here to download the firmware.
Note: Write down the version number that has the format x.x.x.xxxxx in the .LsSetup file name. - Insert and open the SD card on your PC. If an Updates folder already exists at the top level, delete it.
- Create a new Updates folder at the top level. Make sure you capitalize the U.
- Copy the .LsSetup file into the new Updates folder and rename the file to firmware.LsSetup.
- Eject the SD card, and put it into the scanner.
- The scanner will perform an initial check of the update file. This may take a minute or two. Wait until the SD card icon in the header bar stops flashing and disappears.
Install the firmware update

- From the Home screen, navigate to Manage > Service > Firmware Update.
- Verify that Enable Online Updates is OFF.
- Select Update from SD Card.

Focus3D X 30/130/330/HDR
Important! - Verify the currently installed firmware version before upgrading
If your firmware is version 5.2 or earlier, you must first upgrade to version 5.3 before you upgrade to the latest version of firmware. If you do not upgrade to 5.3 prior to upgrading to the latest version, the firmware will not install successfully, and the Focus Scanner may not operate correctly.

The latest version of the FARO® Laser Scanner Focus3D X30/130/330 and FARO® Laser Scanner Focus3D X130/330 HDR firmware is Rev. 5.5.9.1059, released 01 Oct 2018.

- Download the appropriate firmware from the links above and write down the number that appears after Rev in the .zip file name (x.x.x.xxxxx).
- Unzip the file to your desktop. The .zip file contains two files.
1_firmware.LsSetup
2_firmware.LsSetup - Ensure that your scanner is fully charged and plugged in. Take the SD card out of the scanner and put it into your computer.
Transfer 1_firmware.LsSetup From the Computer to the Scanner
- Open the SD card. At the top level, there are at least two folders: Preview and Scans. If there is an Updates folder, delete it. Make sure that you do not use the existing Updates folder.
- Create a new Updates folder at the top level. Make sure you capitalize the U.
- Copy the 1_firmware.LsSetup file into the new Updates folder and rename the file to firmware.LsSetup.
- Remove the SD card, and put it into the scanner.
- On the scanner, go to Manage > Service > Firmware Update and press the Update button.
- After the scanner reboots, take SD card out of the scanner and put it back into your computer.
Transfer 2_firmware.LsSetup From the Computer to the Scanner
- Open the SD card. Delete the Updates folder from the SD card. Make sure that you do not use the existing Updates folder
- Create a new Updates folder at the top level. Make sure you capitalize the U.
- Copy 2_firmware.LsSetup into the new Updates folder and rename it to firmware.LsSetup.
- Remove the SD card from your computer, and put the SD card into the scanner.
- On the scanner, go to Manage > Service > Firmware Update and press the Update button. The update runs, completing in about 45 minutes. When it is finished, the scanner reboots.
Confirm Results
Check that the correct revision number appears.
- Go to Manage > General Settings > Scanner Details.
- Check that the Firmware Revision matches the number you wrote down above.
- If you were upgrading from version 5.2 or earlier, verify the Firmware Revision is 5.3. Then download the latest firmware and repeat the update process.
Focus3D 20/120 and S 20/120
Installation
- Click here to download the firmware. Write down the number that appears after Rev in the .zip file name (x.x.x.xxxxx).
- Unzip the file to your desktop. The .zip file contains two files.

Transfer 1_firmware.LsSetup From the Computer to the Scanner
- Ensure that your scanner has a fully charged battery, then using the scanner's power supply, plug the scanner into an electrical power socket. This ensures that if there is a power outage the upgrade will not be interrupted.
- Take the SD card out of the scanner and put it into your computer.
- Open the SD card with Windows Explorer. At the top level, there are at least two folders: Preview and Scans. You may also have an Updates folder. If it exists, delete it. Make sure that you do not use the existing Updates folder.
- Create a new Updates folder at the top level. Make sure you capitalize the U.
- Copy the 1_firmware.LsSetup file into the new Updates folder and rename the file to firmware.LsSetup.
- Remove the SD card from your computer using the Windows safe removal option, and put the SD card into the scanner.
- On the scanner, go to Manage > Service > Firmware Update and press the Update button. The update runs, completing in about 5 to10 minutes. When the screen goes white, the scanner reboots.
- After the reboot, take SD card out of the scanner and put it into your computer.
- Go to Transfer 2_firmware.LsSetup From the Computer to the Focus3D to continue.
Transfer 2_firmware.LsSetup From the Computer to the Scanner
- Open the SD card with Windows File Explorer. Delete the Updates folder from the SD card. Make sure that you do not use the existing Updates folder
- Create a new Updates folder at the top level. Make sure you capitalize the U.
- Copy 2_firmware.LsSetup into the new Updates folder and rename it to firmware.LsSetup.
- Remove the SD card from your computer using the Windows safe removal option, and put the SD card into the scanner.
- On the scanner, go to Manage > Service > Firmware Update and press the Update button. The update runs, completing in about 45 minutes. When it is finished, the scanner reboots.
- Go to Confirm Results to continue.

Check that the correct revision number appears.
- Go to Manage > General Settings > Scanner Details.
- Check that the Firmware Revision number matches the one you wrote down in Step 1.
Your scanner is ready to use.
