Volume Computation - Fill with BuildIT Construction
Objective:
Use BuildIT Construction to calculate cut and fill volumes.
You’ll learn:
- A simple workflow to perform cut/fill volume analysis.
- Opening a BuildIT file.
- Creating a reference plane
- Perform Cut/Fill Volume Analysis

Create a Reference Plane
Open the “Module 10.1 - Fill Volume - Excavation” file by selecting “File> Open” and navigating to where the file is saved.
- Select “Refine > Extract Surface”.
- Name the plane “Reference Plane”.
- Use the Fill option to select the top points, as shown below.
- Use a value of 1 inch for the tolerance.
- Select Apply.
Cut and Fill Volume Analysis
- Now, the analysis will be performed.
- Select “Evaluate > Floor/Grade Analysis > Cut and Fill Volume Analysis”.
- Select the Cloud.
- Select the “Reference Plane”
- Enter 0 for "Tolerance threshold"
- The tolerance threshold represents a certain distance above or below the reference plane to ignore. For instance, entering 0.25 inch would represent a small area above or below the reference plane where the volume would not be calculated.
- Specify a Resolution (zone size). Use 2 inches for this exercise.
- The zone size is the sampling distance on a grid for the analysis.
- Select Lowest Point for Height Evaluation.
- Check “Display result as a mesh”.
- This will show the resulting point cloud as a mesh.
- Uncheck “Detect walls”.
- Uncheck “Clean up debris”.
- Select Apply.
Result
Check the messages for area and volume calculations.
Note: You can uncheck "Display Object" for the point clouds (leave "Cloud Map" checked) to achieve a better onscreen view of the result.
Recap:
Congratulations, you have completed the volume computation module! By now you should have a grasp of the following:
- A simple workflow to perform cut/fill volume analysis.
- Opening a BuildIT file.
- Creating a reference plane
- Perform Cut/Fill Volume Analysis
