Notice on Your Data Rights with FARO Scanning Devices
Overview
According to Regulation (EU) 2023/2854 (EU Data Act, Articles 3–8), users of FARO hardware devices (such as Focus, Blink, Orbis, Leap, FaroArm, Vantage) are entitled to specific rights regarding their device-generated data. This notice informs you about these rights and your device’s data logging functionality.
Scope of Applicability (Territorial and Temporal)
The EU Data Act applies to connected products or related services placed by FARO or through FARO’s official distribution channels on the EU market if and to the extent to use of such connected products or related services takes place in the EU.
The rights described herein become legally enforceable starting 12 September 2025. These apply to connected devices in use after this date that satisfy the definitions under the Act. Devices purchased prior to this date will only fall within the scope if they qualify as “connected products” and remain supported/enabled for data access; legacy or non-connected devices may be exempt from these requirements.
Your Rights
- Right of Access: Request and obtain, free of charge, product and service data generated by your FARO device, including essential metadata for correct interpretation.
- Third-Party Authorization: Authorize a service provider, partner, or other third party to retrieve your device data on your behalf.
- Accessible Formats & Retrieval: Usage and operational data are captured by integrated logging functionality and are stored on internal memory and on an SD card for export purposes and can be transferred via USB-C connection or wireless transfer.
- Standardized Data Format: Device log data is stored as structured plain text (.txt) files, featuring consistent field separators and codes for automated parsing and analysis in standard spreadsheet or log processing software. Technical documentation covers all relevant file specifications.
- Pre-contractual Information: Before purchase, buyers are informed via FARO’s Knowledge Base article on relevant data types, formats, estimated data volumes, storage, data access and erasure procedures, and real-time availability.
Illustration of Key Data Categories and Format Overview in your device’s logging functionality (Focus and Blink example, see your handbook for device-specific information)
| Data Category | Description | Format (File Type) | Storage Location | Typical Volume | Access Method | Retention Period | Real-time Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scan Metadata | Scan time, Scan ID, Device ID, Parameters | TXT (.txt) | Internal memory | ~100kB/scan | Focus: export via SD Card; Blink: export via USB stick | Until automatically deleted to create space on device | Immediate post-scan |
| Usage Statistics | Scan counts, device operating time | TXT (.txt) | Internal memory | ~10kB/session | Focus: export via SD Card; Blink: export via USB stick | Until automatically deleted to create space on device | Immediate |
| Event/Error Logs | Errors, warnings, diagnostics, events | TXT (.txt) | Internal memory | ~50–200kB/session | Focus: export via SD Card; Blink: export via USB stick | Until automatically deleted to create space on device | Immediate |
| Environmental Data | Battery status, internal temperature | TXT (.txt) | Internal memory, SD card | <10kB/session | Focus: export via SD Card; Blink: export via USB stick | Until automatically deleted to create space on device | Immediate |
- Format Details: Log files contain structured entries with timestamps, field labels, and standardized delimiters, ensuring easy automated processing.
- Typical Volumes: Log files range from 10kB to 200kB per scan/session, depending on activity and device type.
- Storage and Retention: Data remains stored locally until it gets automatically deleted when logs grow to large.
- Access and Erasure: Step-by-step retrieval and deletion procedures, as well as supported file format details, are documented in the device handbook and FARO Knowledge Base.
