Communication Issue Troubleshooting With a Serial FaroArm
If communication between the computer and the FaroArm system has been lost, or if it could not be established, the source of this issue may lie in one or all of the following areas:
- Check that no conflicts are cause by unauthorized software or hardware (palm pilots, digital cameras, scanners, zip drives, modems etc.)
- Check the cables and connectors for bent pins, secure connections, or damage.
- Check to make sure that the correct cables are being used.
- Check that only the Faro Arm software is running on the computer.
- Check baud rate and communications port. (See setting below )
- Check for computer manufactures proprietary utilities (Example: IBM Think Pad Utilities).
- Check functionality of the Faro Arm (Look for error codes or arm operation issues).
- Check functionality of computer’s hardware.
- Check functionality of computer’s software. (Fragmented and clusters files could cause problems)
These communication errors can be solved in the following way:
- Adjust baud rate settings.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall wait 15 seconds then plug it in.
- Replace faulty power module.
- Replace faulty cables.
- Solve any software or setting conflict and adjust manufactures utilities.
- Disable all screen savers, hibernation files and energy settings.
- Download the latest drivers and utilities from the computer manufacturer.
- Perform computer system maintenance. (Contact the customer service department for instructions)
- Upgrade the Faro Arm software to the latest versions.
- Reload the Faro Software. (For installation instructions call the customer service department).
This information will help with the setup of the communications port and interface with the Faro Arm.
When connecting the Faro Arm to the computer use serial port (COM1) number one.
- Non-serial box FARO ARMS are recommended settings:
- Baud rate (Bits per second): 38,400
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bits: 1
- Flow control: None
- Serial Box FaroArms recommending settings:
- Baud rate (Bits per second): 9,600 (Nothing over 38,400)
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bits: 1
- Flow control: None
